Ceramics 2

Inspiration

I drew inspiration from the Queen of Hearts castle from Alice in Wonderland. The piece will also include aspects of the magic in the world from Alice in Wonderland. This will include the Cheshire Cat, the roses painted white and the guards shaped like playing cards.

Sketches

I painted this project to reflect as accurately as possible the colors from the animated Alice in Wonderland. The scene has 8 trees all of which originally had white flowers but following the story from the movie, “paint the roses red”, the flowers were painted red. I also included little cookies and snacks similar to those Alice could consume to grow or shrink in height. I enjoy my project much more now that it’s painted and completed. I think the use of acrylic paint pulled it together nicely.

Inspiration

For this project, I drew inspiration from my love of fashion. I chose snail as my animal because I could utilize the snails shell and features as fashion pieces. I plan to use the snails shell as a shoulder purse. I plan to incorporate my new baggy jeans and top into intus outfit as a representation of me. I will also build the snail to have muscle definition l like me. I wanted t add this feature to represent my life as an athlete and gym enthusiast.

Progress

There were few issues with this project. The only change I made from the original plan was adding wrinkles to the pants to give the snail a more dynamic and realistic clothing look. I also had to carve a small hole in the back of the head so that when firing the head doesn’t explode. Another issue I dealt with was a small crack in the back of the pants but I fixed it with a little bit of magic slip and I had no more issues with it.

I used these images as reference for the wrinkles I added to the pants. I wanted to focus on the accurate folds and bends baggy pants are famous for.

This was a few project pictures after I had finished the basic coil structure. In the pants and the top you can see I started to smooth out the clay.

In these pictures, I had added the shirt and I started magic rocking the body. I used the magic rock to smooth it because I wanted the snails skin to have an extra slimy appearance when finished.

In these pictures, the snail is almost fully completed. I used the piping gun to create a small coil for the strap of the purse as well as the straw for the boba. In the 3rd photo, pictured is the small crack I dealt with which is barely noticeable. I did not magic rock the pants again after I added the wrinkles because I wanted the jeans to have some roughness like they are in real life.

Painting

I used the “stoned denim” high fire glaze for my snails skin to give her a multi toned slimy appearance. I painted the clothes and accessories using ——— to reflect an outfit I personally own and wear frequently.

Finished Project

I’m very happy with my end result of this project. I think my favorite part is my snails outfit but I feel as though it is a good representation of my style.

Airplane

For this project, I drew inspiration from a family experience where we got to build an airplane together. I tried to make my own airplane as similar as possible to the one my family made.

Progress

I used slabs to build the body of the plane as well as for the wings. By rounding the slabs on the body slightly, the plane appeared similarly curved to the plane I used as inspiration. I spent a lot of time shaping the wings to narrow to a wedge. The first set of wings I made were nearly perfect but there was a lot of difficulty with attaching the wings. Because the wings have little to hold onto and the connection is nearly completely perpendicular, making the only support slip and a small coil as to not ruin the accuracy of the planes look. Given this issue, the wings fell off twice causing me to ultimately make three different sets of wings. I built the cloud with a pinch pot like method. I wanted its shape to be as organic as possible which is why I didnt smooth or modify the structure after the original build.

Painting

I painted the cloud in a glaze combination. I used white and dabbed a light grey into it to give it some depth and a secondary tone. I planned on painting the plane with glaze but I did not have the correct colors to match those of the plane I worked on making. It was important to me that the colors matched because we spent a lot of time choosing the colors on the actual plane. I instead used acrylics and later had it coated in a clear glaze so that it would still shine like a smooth metal.

Final Portfolio Reflection

I think I grew a lot this semester. I definitely found more meaning behind the pieces I built and focused on creating the pieces to fit my image of them in my head. I think my favorite piece to make was my airplane because there was a lot of meaning behind it for me. I also loved gifting it to my dad afterwards since we built the real plane together a couple years ago. I think I could’ve had more success this semester if I had had more time to complete projects. I am proud of all of my pieces because they all reflect different parts of my learning journey.
